Severstal, one of the world's leading vertically integrated steel and mining companies, has been named the Russian steel industry leader for environmental transparency. This research was conducted by Interfax-ERA, the ecological and energy agency, ahead of the Year of Ecology in Russia.

The agency examined data from annual corporate and social reports as well as information from the websites of around 5,000 companies, since 2005. This included data on fresh water consumption and wastewater volumes, air emissions from stationary sources and transportation, occupied area and waste generation, as well as fuel, heat and electricity consumption, product manufacturing of and the number of employees working at the company's plants. Against these indicators. the agency experts concluded that Severstal is the Russian steel industry leader for environmental transparency.

In recent years, one of the largest environmental projects at Cherepovets Steel Mill has been the construction of a unit to contain emissions (completed in 2014 and costing about 3.4 billion rubles). This project has reduced emissions by eight times. At Severstal's Resources division the Company is committed to the safe disposal of ore waste, reducing dust and restoring land affected during the processing cycle. At its coal assets, Severstal remains focused on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and wastewater treatment.

Alexander Shevelev, CEO of Severstal, said: 'The environmental management systems at Severstal's Cherepovets Steel Mill, Karelsky Okatysh, and several other assets are certified for compliance with the international standard ISO 14001:2004. Every year we invest significantly into modernizing our production methods and environmental protection systems in order to reduce Severstal's impact on the environment and we have achieved considerable enhancements to air emissions and wastewater treatment at the Cherepovets Steel Mill.'

In 2016 Severstal Management, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology, the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources and the Government of Vologda region signed a quadripartite agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, in 2017, Severstal has committed to building a ladle furnace at the Cherepovets Steel Mill for the new metal finishing unit. The cost of the project is more than half a billion rubles. Environmental protection measures for 2017 are also planned at Severstal's resource assets, focused on reducing the technological impact on the atmosphere, soil and water.
