India’s BIS Extension for Batteries Registered to IS 16046:2012 Is Coming to An End

In December 2016, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued CMD-3/16:16046 extending the concurrent acceptance of IS 16046:2012 and IS 16046:2015.

IS 16046:2015 has been an option for manufacturers for some time, but only came into common usage after March 2016. The earlier version continued to be used mainly due to a lack of accredited laboratories. As the deadline for registration to the 2015 version approached, BIS extended compliance dates causing the battery registration schedule and the requirement to use IS 16046:2015 to become very close to each other. This caused a perfect storm of manufacturers trying to get their batteries registered and labs applying to become accredited by BIS to the 2015 version of IS 16046.

Given the option to not ship to India, or to use the older version of IS 16046, India opted to extend the compliance deadline, allowing registration to the older version. This extension is now expiring. As July ends, any manufacturer still registered under IS 16046:2012 will be moving to IS 16046:2015 or risk cancellation of their BIS registration.
