SGS is at the forefront of developing robotic and automation systems to help manufacturers quickly get their products onto the market. These systems can now be found in major laboratories around the world, working on automotive, chemical and EE testing. The key to the success of these systems is that they combine high levels of accuracy with greater productivity, creating superior levels of customer satisfaction.

STAS

Developed and copyrighted by SGS, the Safety Testing Automation System (STAS) is a data acquisition and motion control platform applied to the field of EE safety testing. It incorporates a computerized approach to both testing and reporting, allowing greater automation of product safety testing procedures.

STAS translates the test methods into robotic language by establishing a communication connection between the control platform and the power supply system, testing instruments and auxiliary devices. This integrated system allows manufacturers and testing/certification organizations to conduct tests more efficiently, with test data automatically being recorded during the processes.

This approach to testing has several benefits:

  • Improved quality of test results through minimizing or even eliminating manual operation/monitoring/recording of safety tests
  • Improved health, safety & environment (HSE) ratings through the elimination of manual handling of dangerous products and automated operation of test procedures
  • Optimized equipment utilization that leads to increased testing capacity and productivity
  • Digitized test data available for further analysis and utilization

A good example of how STAS can improve efficiency, quality and safety in the testing environment is its application in the Battery Testing Automation System (BATAS). STAS has automated the installation and removal of testing samples or batteries using robots. In addition, the STAS system will also automatically export test data and reports via remote communication and control.

Another area where STAS has greatly improved productivity is in the testing of LED lights. Through mechanization of the process using robots, the LED light-source Automation Testing System can function continuously for 24 hours. Previously, it would be expected that the manual capacity for this sort of test would be two projects a day, but with STAS that figure is now six projects a day.

Health & Safety

Traditionally battery testing has resulted in fires and explosion, as batteries are tested to their limits. However, using BATAS significantly improves health and safety by reducing these risks.

As the world becomes increasingly automated and people become more reliant on the Internet of Things (IoT), manufacturing will enter to new age of interconnected intelligence.
