Brazil plans to propose a regulation similar to the EU's Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

In late 2017, Brazilian government announced plans to propose a regulation similar to the EU's RoHS Directive. The environment ministry (MMA) believed that hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment (EEE) can do harm to human health and cause pollution to environment.

The proposal is under preparation and review in response to the national reality by the Department of Environmental Quality and Waste Management (DQAR), under Secretariat of Water Resources and Environmental Quality (SRHQ), in conjunction with Ministry of Environment (MMA) together with the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) of the Ministry of Justice. For more clarification and general consciousness of the Brazilian reality, a questionnaire was developed and released by MMA requesting all parties involved in the subject matter of EEE to review and comment. The deadline of the completion of the questionnaire was January 15, 2018. With the analysis of the questionnaire, an initial version of the regulation will be drawn up and available for public consultation.

The following categories of EEE are considered by the government:

  • Appliances, such as freezers, washing machines, electric ovens, vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, clocks and wrist watches;

  • Computer and telecommunications equipment, such as desktops, notebooks and cell phones;

  • Lighting equipment;

  • Electrical and electronic tools;

  • Toys, sports and leisure equipment;

  • Medical devices.
