SGS : ISO 50001 Revision Update

The latest draft of ISO 50001 has been circulated to the ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 301, Energy Management and Energy Savings members for a 12-week ballot / comment period, which closes on November 13, 2017. Publication of the new edition of the ISO 50001 International Standard is currently planned for November/December 2018.

Published in 2011, ISO 50001 EnMS is a proven framework, helping industrial facilities, commercial facilities, or entire organizations to manage energy - including all aspects of energy use. An energy management system enables organizations to establish the systems and processes necessary to continually improve energy performance, including energy use, energy consumption and energy efficiency.

The standard provides requirements for a systematic, data-driven process, focused on continually improving energy performance to significantly cut energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions, and sustain those savings over time. The growth of ISO 50001 is expected to accelerate as an increasing number of companies integrate ISO 50001 into their corporate sustainability strategies and supplier requirements.

The new revision will incorporate the same high-level structure and common text from the Annex SL High Level Structure that is included in ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015. It specifies that an organization shall determine external and internal issues, understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties. An organization should also determine the risks and opportunities that need to be addressed to achieve the intended outcomes of its EnMS and improve its energy performance. This ensures that ISO 50001 maintains a high level of compatibility with other management systems.

The main changes to ISO 50001 are as follows:

• Adoption of the Annex SL Annex 2, High Level Structure text to ensure compatibility with other management system standards
• Energy Review has been clarified
• Normalization of EnPI(s) and associated EnB(s)
• Clarification on the energy data collection plan and related requirements
• EnPI and EnB text has been clarified to provide a better understanding of these concepts

What's next?

Here are the important dates for the ISO 50001 revision process:

• February 2018: TC 301 secretary issues DIS ballot result and associated public comments
• June 2018: TC 301 WG1 meeting in Mexico to consider comments on DIS
• July 18, 2018: Final draft of the international standard (FDIS) submitted to ISO the eight-week FDIS ballot
• November/December 2018: ISO publishes ISO 50001:2018
