A new white paper from SGS highlights risk-based evaluation as key to best meeting REACH Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) obligations.

As electrical and electronic products become ever more complex, the industry faces a huge challenge in compliance with an increasingly demanding legal framework for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).

Today's challenge to electrical and electronic (E&E) products companies lies in the growing complexity of products coupled with an ever-increasing Candidate List of SVHC articles which, since 2008, has increased to 183.

In light of these challenges, SGS has published a White Paper to meet increasing demand for a reasonable and cost-effective approach to the SVHC compliance issue. It explores how existing approaches, such as pure testing and quality management, often result in high costs and increased use of resources.

Based on research which establishes that not all SVHC can be found in E&E products, it recommends a risk-based approach which:

  • Offers a more cost-effective, intelligent and reasonable strategy
  • More effectively identifies and monitors SVHC specifically relating to E&E products
  • Reduces the cost of traditional laboratory testing which covers the whole product with reference to the entire Candidate List
  • Reduces complexity, when compared to a quality management strategy, by targeting high risk materials and components
