SGS in Shenzhen is the only laboratory in mainland China offering a one-stop solution to manufacturers of wireless charging products hoping to fulfill the requirements for Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) certification.

Laws regulating electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) have become stricter in recent years. At a time when the global economy has slowed, with margins inevitably becoming squeezed, manufacturers of wireless charging products must find cost-effective ways to gain the certification they need to access their target markets.

WPC certification helps manufacturers of wireless charging equipment to ensure safety, interoperability and energy efficiency in their products. Certification to this standard helps mitigate against the risk of overheating, incompatibility with other wireless charging units, concerns over device damage. Products that do not have WPC certification may work inefficiently and could risk harm to the device or operator, causing damage to the brand.

Founded in 2008, the WPC's membership includes leading manufacturers of mobile phones, consumer electronics, batteries, semiconductors, components, wireless power technology and infrastructure such as wireless operators, furniture and automotive parts. Its open standard has been developed by all the leading stakeholders, meaning a product with WPC certification is showing its compatibility with industry requirements around the world.

New Criteria for WPC Certification

A new version of the requirements for WPC certification was released on March 8, 2018, meaning products must now match the criteria in version 1.2.4. The new version retains the requirements for the Extended Power Profile (EPP) test and Baseline Power Profile (BPP) but removes the poorly defined definition for BPP plus Foreign Object Damage (FOD). Stakeholders should also be aware that products with power exceeding 5W must now also meet the requirements in the EPP test.

SGS WPC Services in Shenzhen

SGS is currently the only laboratory on mainland China to offer EPP testing services for products up to 15W and is WPC authorized for its testing services. The laboratory in Shenzhen offers a comprehensive range of compliance testing services for manufacturers of EEE and has two sets of BPP test equipment and one set of EPP test equipment.

Interoperability is a major problem for manufacturers of wireless changing equipment. According to the latest data released by Telecommunication Technology Association of Korea (TTA), the WPC's designated interoperability testing laboratory, the current fail rate for interoperability is around 30% and is much higher for EPP, up to 60%. SGS maintains a solid working relationship with TTA and this led to the establishing of a TTA pre-interoperability test laboratory at the SGS facility in Shenzhen.

Companies looking for a one-stop solution for WPC certification in mainland China should therefore contact the SGS facility in Shenzhen. It is the only laboratory in mainland China offering fast, efficient and cost-effective testing services for all elements of WPC certification, including pre-interoperability testing. Manufacturers working with SGS will find their time to certification is reduced and their certification cycle is shortened, allowing them to more quickly access their target markets.
