Ashridge Business School has demonstrated its commitment to sustainable development by achieving ISO 50001 certification for its Grade 1 listed building.

Ashridge Business School is a center for management and organizational excellence, renowned for its commitment to sustainability. It ensures that its education, consulting and research work is consistent with the principles of sustainable development.

To further demonstrate its commitment, and to gain an advantage over competitors, Ashridge worked with SGS to achieve ISO 50001 certification. This proved challenging, as the school is located in a Grade 1 listed property. Therefore, it had to balance the conservation of a traditionally constructed and historic building with the need to improve energy performance as required by ISO 50001.

SGS supported Ashridge during the ISO 50001 assessment process. During an initial audit, conducted by SGS in November 2015, some nonconformities were identified. SGS continued to work with Ashridge, showing it how to make necessary improvements to its energy management system. Certification was achieved after a follow up audit at the end of January 2016.

To show its commitment to ISO 50001 certification, Ashridge must demonstrate continual improvement in energy performance. It has done this by implementing short and long term energy plans.

Ashridge was certified to ISO 14001 in 2011 through SGS, and it was recertified to this standard in 2014. According to Rebecca Hall, Ashridge's sustainability coordinator, the school is constantly striving to improve its repertoire in terms of energy performance.
