SGS is pleased to announce the expansion of its Art Services with the opening of offices in New York City and Fairfield, New Jersey.

Joining with their colleagues in London and Geneva, a dedicated team of experts from the art, museum, and conservation worlds use innovative technology and state-of-the-art equipment to examine and document works of art. Their proprietary condition reporting software answers a desperate need in the field for standardized, well-illustrated condition reports prepared by professional, qualified conservators. By applying their dedication to quality and transparency to the art market, they are focused on building trust between all involved parties and providing support for the acquisition, sale, lending, movement, and management of works of art.
In the New York Art Services office, SGS has recently been joined by Coordinator and Senior Conservation Specialist, Lauren Fly. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Mary Washington College with a BA in Art History and Historic Preservation, Lauren trained as a paintings conservator at New York University's Conservation Center, and undertook her postgraduate work at the Hamilton Kerr Institute at the University of Cambridge. She has worked extensively in private studios in England and the Netherlands, where she served as a paintings conservator at the Instituut Collectie Nederland. Her diverse experience and wide network of museum and conservation professionals has meant she has been called upon for projects as diverse as a mid-16th century canvas from the Ottoman Court for exhibition at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, to a complex contemporary piece by Kees van Bohemen.
SGS's Art Services team in the US has extensive experience in the fine art sector. Newly appointed Business Development lead Robin Roche's understanding of the US art market is second-to-none. Following a degree in Art History from the University of California, Riverside, Robin worked in business management at Christie's for nearly a decade before serving as director of the Gerald Peters Gallery in New York. Since then, she has specialized in businesses that revolutionize the art world, including Artnet Auctions, the first e-commerce site for Fine Art and launched the American branch of the online auction house, Auctionata.
As part of a global team of art experts, these new offices offer third party, independent services tailored specifically to the needs of the art world. From its dedicated laboratory in Geneva Freeport, SGS administers a global network of experienced, professional art experts, conservation scientists, and conservators. They provide galleries, museums, collectors, insurance companies, fine arts shipping companies, and art advisers (among others) with a range of services, including:

  • Examination and condition reporting before sale and during logistical operations (exhibitions, loans, storage, shipping)
  • Technical imaging, analysis and dating
  • Inventory of fine art collections

In recent years, the art world has been shaken by a number of high profile scandals, with much discussion surrounding issues of due diligence and the importance of a properly informed and educated market. By calling upon the independent expertise of SGS's Art Services experts, interested parties can protect themselves from issues of condition, liability, and authenticity using objective data prepared by experienced, qualified professionals.

SGS's Art Services

SGS is the only art service provider in its category to maintain a global presence, including a dedicated laboratory in the Geneva Freeport. SGS has developed a unique system to monitor the condition of artworks globally, based on an international network of qualified conservators, proprietary software, and rigorous museum-level procedures.
