SAFEGUARDS | Softlines NO. 172/16

Japan will adopt the new care labelling standard JIS L0001-2014 under the Household Products Quality Labelling Law with an effective date of December 1, 2016.

The new JIS L0001-2014 'Textile - Care Labelling Code Using Symbols' is harmonized with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 3758:2012 'Textile - Care Labelling Code Using Symbols'. The new Japanese standard contains 5 basic textile care symbols in the order of washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional textile care treatments of dry and wet cleaning and also a number of additional symbols. The new standard is effective on December 1, 2016.

Along with the effectiveness of the new standard implementation, textile products must be labelled with care symbols according to the JIS L0001-2014 in order to be accepted in the Japanese market. And the care information must be permanently attached to the textile product, either printed directly on the product or on a sewn in label. The label must be visible, indelible and easily accessible to the consumer.
