Publication of the highly anticipated ISO 45001 is likely to be delayed after the Draft International Standard failed to gain approval by the committee ISO/PC 283.

The first Draft International Standard (DIS) of ISO 45001 was made available for public consultation on January 14, 2016. Participating National Standards Bodies were balloted on the draft standard between February 12 and May 12 with the objective of approving the DIS.

71% of members voted in favor of the DIS, with 28% against and 1% abstaining. In order for the DIS to be passed, two-thirds had to be in favor with less than a quarter against, taking into account abstentions.

The consultation that took place during the ballot period resulted in more than 3,000 comments. Due to the scale of feedback received, it is likely that publication of this standard will be further delayed. The next ISO/PC283 Project Committee meeting in June will review the comments and address concerns raised by participating members during the ballot. Once these issues have been resolved, the Project Committee will also need to decide if the revised document can go forward as the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS).

Future Updates

SGS continues to have ongoing involvement in the development of the new standard.

Further information and updates on the development of ISO 45001 and its publication schedule will be issued by SGS as they become available.
