Whether we're talking about diagnostic imaging equipment, endoscopy or defibrillators, manufacturers and importers must meet high product requirements on most markets around the world. The "health check" list of medical devices includes a number of certifications and exams. The latest SGS seminar was meant to inform customers about the current development and solutions in the field of medical technology.

"We wanted to build on the successful event from last year which covered "Testing & Certification of Medical Devices ", said Armin Hudetz , Team Leader Customer Service EMC & Safety.

The event took place on May 7th, at the SGS facilities in Munich, Germany, under the direction of SGS experts in the field of EMC & Product Safety. Our experts worked together with highly qualified speakers from the industry to present, on top of the required testing programme, the latest regulations, trends and challenges in the industry.

SGS's business managers Matthias Popp and Armin Hudetz officially opened this one-day seminar that aimed to cover a wide range of topics related to medical technologies. They were followed by SGS expert Jürgen Bock, who informed the audience about the test requirements for lithium batteries in the medical sector according to IEC 62133, the UN 38.3 and other standards. Clemens Mohr from MT Promedt Consulting GmbH continued the seminar with a presentation on the new European regulation for medical devices.

SGS's Peter Reindl then gave the audience a quick look at the future requirements for audio / video, information and communication technologies and provided information about the challenges manufacturers will face in the future. He further introduced the new standard IEC 62368-1, which is to replace the standards IEC 60950-1 and IEC 60065.

Gudrun Neumann of SGS-TÜV Saar GmbH complemented the seminar with an overview of requirements for medical devices software and provided further practical tips for manufacturers.

The event concluded with a tour of the SGS laboratories in Munich with stops in the EMC and product safety laboratories, the Battery Test House and the environmental simulation compound. "Information transfer is known to be a two way street and so between lectures there is enough time for the speakers and the audience to exchange information and discuss the latest trends" added Armin Hudetz.
