In September, SGS held its first symposium on a new generation of risk management, where the challenges of safely integrating Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) into civil airspace and commercial operations were the topics of the day. The event, held at the Crown Casino, Burswood, Perth, Western Australia covered a variety of RPAS industry topics presented by an international panel of speakers.

RPAS Risk Management Continues To Evolve

As commercial industries of the world continue to move forward in enabling remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS or drones), consideration must be given to some of the ageing risk management systems considered adequate and familiar. RPAS applications continue to be utilised at exponential rates across industries, from large scale pipeline survey operations in the Middle East, to inspection of copper mines in Canada and Australia and tasks on offshore rigs in many of the oceans around the world.

Taking advantage of this highly desirable technology, the eyes of the experts focus on integration of RPAS not only into our civil airspace, but also into our commercial space. Just as the challenges of airspace integration have the aviation experts occupied, the corporate world is now realising the challenges associated with due diligence, privacy and corporate responsibility when enabling RPAS.

Successful Symposia

The symposia proved very popular and offered the chance to exchange information in a relaxed and interactive environment. The delegates remarked on the scope, depth and relevance of the topics covered. For the future, we were asked by delegates to continue making available any new changes in the RPAS industry. Our team are already working hard to make sure this successful first step is just the beginning of a long-term education program from SGS.
