NO. 149/15

The International Association of Bedding and Furniture Law Officials (IABFLO) has recently released a new guidance document with detailed description and examples of Uniform Law Labeling requirements, including label formats for bedding and furniture law labels.

Certain US states require a tag or label that provides information to consumers about filling materials in bedding products, furniture and certain stuffed articles. The products requiring law labels and labeling requirements vary in different states. Thus, law labels are governed on a state-by-state basis by various departments.

Highlights of updates to the Law Labels for Bedding & Furniture:

Size - Minimum type font size of 1/8" inch is required in all sections of the law label, including all upper and lower case letters, except the certification section that begins with "Certification is made …" and the "other information section", where there is no font size requirement. Note is given that not all 9 point fonts fit the 1/8" inch minimum test criteria.

Printing - The sections "UNDER PENALTY OF LAW" and "ALL NEW MATERIAL" must be in bold print and in capital letters. All nomenclature used to describe the fillings must be in capital letters and bold. The phrase "consisting of" can be in lower case but needs to be in bold print.

Other Information - The requirement of "Date of Delivery ___" has been eliminated, however, the manufacturer or importer may continue to provide this information if preferred.

Since there is no specified implementation for date of enforcement, the states are expected to follow this new guidance which will be monitored state by state.
