Inititated by Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, hosted by Huangpu District Government, Xuhui District Government and Shanghai Media Group, and sponsored by Shanghai Pharma, the SPH 2017 Music in the Summer Air (MISA) kicked off on July 2.

2,400 Katydid Cages deliver the 'Sounds of the Summer'

At the opening ceremony, Zhou Ping, head of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Zhou Jun, President of SIIC and Chairman of Shanghai Pharma, and Bill Thomas, Executive Director of New York Philharmonic, jointly unveiled the Sounds of the Summer, an artistic device specially designed for this year's MISA. Inspired by the natural sounds collected in the summer days, the device utilizes 2,400 katydid cages made with traditional handicraft with an expectation to recall the childhood memory about summer days among the audience.

'While striving to make Shanghai Pharma bigger and stronger, we've always been dedicated to strengthening our awareness of social responsibility and serving the people's well-being, while attaching great importance to the big health industry,' said Zhou Jun while addressing the opening ceremony. 'The relation between music and medicine may well be traced back to a long time ago. Shanghai Pharma's sponsorship to the MISA is based on the maturely developed understanding. There is a saying in the Inner Canon of Huangdi that man has five organs just like the Heaven that has five sounds; man has six hollow viscera just like the Heaven that has six laws. Music can help purify our soul while medicine cures diseases. The medical undertaking is closely related to national welfare and the people's livelihood and carries glory and responsibility. In the future, we will continue to promote, by means of our expertise, this city's material and cultural prosperity and enhance the people's physical and mental health.'

Pianist Bronfman Enjoys Great Popularity among the Music Fans

At the opening concert, New York Philharmonic performed Dvorak's Ninth Symphony 'From the New World' under the baton of Music Director Alan Gilbert and Brahms' Piano Concerto No.2 in B flat minor in collaboration with pianist Yefim Bronfman. This is the third time that New York Philharmonic has performed at the opening concert of the MISA. At this year's MISA, they will interpret the sound from the 'New World' with four concerts in different styles.

Bronfman, the pianist who made his debut in Shanghai, won thunderous applause from among the local crazy music fans. 'Shanghai is an interesting city for me. I've seen a lot of young people at the MISA, which is a great pleasure and fulfilment,' said Bronfman, who started his cooperation with New York Philharmonic about four decades ago.

One big city, two concert stages

Apart from the resident show performed by New York Philharmonic, from July 2 to 15, the MISA will present 25 concerts under the theme of 'Add Flavor to the Classical', which will be staged at Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Music Hall and Shanghai City Lawn Music Plaza simultaneously. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will partner with Wynton Marsalis to deliver the summer jazz music. The Penguin Cafe Orchestra, a diversified British music band, will make its show after nearly a decade-long quiescence. Hang Gai, the leading rock-n-roll music band in China will launch a symphonic rock-n-roll show in collaboration with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Tan Dun, a famous musician and conductor in China. The acoustic music of two films, Amadeus and Titanic, will retain the classical legend of Oscar. At the closing concert, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra will also present wonderful performance under the baton of Music Director Yu Long.
