MILPITAS, CA--(Marketwired - Sep 10, 2014) - Sigma Designs® (NASDAQ: SIGM), a leading provider of intelligent system-on-chip (SoC) solutions for Smart TV, Smart home and IP-based set-top-boxes (STBs), today announced the world's first demonstration of G.hn (next generation home networking) technology coexisting side-by-side with legacy HomePlug on the same powerline wiring. This advance, which enables seamless migration from HomePlug to the rapidly growing G.hn ecosystem, will be showcased at IBC 2014 in Sigma Designs' suite #BM7, September 12-16 in Amsterdam.

G.hn is a family of ITU-T Recommendations (standards) defining an advanced home networking technology for distribution of IP content across any wire within a home: AC power lines, coax cables and phone lines. G.hn provides higher performance and better coverage using existing wiring for services including broadband data, HD programs, video-on-demand (VOD), whole-home HD digital video recordings (DVR), voice over IP (VoIP), and streaming of HD video, music, and photos.

This compatibility across generations of powerline technology eliminates the need for service providers to maintain information regarding the networking protocols in homes. With G.hn, products can be shipped from service providers to new users and installed easily, without the need for truck rolls or service calls.

"While G.hn is the clear technology for future wired home networking, consumers and providers of smart home products and services need a migration path from their existing HomePlug networks to G.hn," said Nadav Katsir, vice president of Sigma Designs' home connectivity business unit. "Just as we have demonstrated with HomePNA and G.hn networks, our peaceful coexistence across these various network types allows users to move to the G.hn, whether or not they already have a legacy technology implemented in the home. With G.hn service providers can offer new advanced services including multiple simultaneous 4K support, while retailers can avoid costly returns of product by dissatisfied consumers since there is no conflict between the various technologies."

"At the HomeGrid Forum, we are committed to the unified coax, phone and powerline G.hn home networking technology and ensuring a smooth migration path from legacy networks to advanced G.hn ones," said John Egan, president of HomeGrid Forum. "The ability of the Sigma Designs G.hn chipset networks to coexist with HomePlug networks is an important step forward, ensuring a smooth transition from the older technologies to networks based on next generation G.hn."

Sigma Designs' CG5200 family of G.hn chipsets enables a home entertainment network that can be self-installed by the consumer for Triple play and IPTV service distribution across all existing wires in the home: coax cable, phone line, and powerline.

Demonstrations of Sigma Designs' full portfolio of products that enable the smart home can be viewed in suite #BM7 at IBC 2014.
