Three teams from Singapore Management University (SMU) and National University of Singapore (NUS) beat their peers across tertiary institutions and emerged as this year's NUS-SGX Stock Pitch Competition winners at the finals held last night in SGX's auditorium.

The top winner went to a SMU team of four finance undergraduates who made a pitch on Global Logistic Properties. The first runner-up was another SMU team of four accountancy, finance and information system undergraduates who covered Cordlife, while the second runner-up went to a NUS team of four finance undergraduates who pitched for Singapore Airlines.

The NUS-SGX Stock Pitch Competition is a nationwide tertiary stock pitching competition designed to give students a peek into the equities research industry and for them to demonstrate their stock picking skills to a panel of experienced industry professionals. This is the first year Singapore Exchange (SGX) is co-sponsoring this competition, which has been organised by the National University of Singapore Investment Society (NUS Invest) for the 3year running.

The panel of judges included Andy Sim, Senior Vice President, DBS Equity Research, June Zhu, Executive Director, Global Investment Research, Goldman Sachs, Professor Hon Sing Lee, Senior Finance Lecturer, NUS Business School, Lynn Gaspar, Head of Retail Investors and Intermediaries, SGX, and Th'ng Beng Hooi, SGX Academy Trainer.

The competition challenges participants to prepare and submit an investment report setting out the 'buy/sell/hold' recommendation on a single stock over a one-year investment time horizon in just five days, and the final eight teams that were selected based on the quality of the report were then given just 48 hours to prepare the pitch presentation. The intensity of the competition was meant to simulate the fast-paced and demanding working environment of investment analysts and asset managers. The judging criteria were quality of analysis, presentation delivery and response during the question and answer session.

This year's competition attracted registration from a record 81 teams from Nanyang Technological University, NUS, Singapore Institute of Management, SMU and Temasek Polytechnic.

Lynn Gaspar, Head of Retail Investors and Intermediaries, SGX, said, 'We (the judges) were impressed by the breadth of the analyses, extensive use of valuation techniques, and compelling stock pitch presentations put up by the finalists, many of whom have already started investing. SGX always encourages informed investment decisions, and in recent years we've been partnering universities in organising events and learning initiatives targeted at undergraduates. It's fantastic to see the students apply the financial skills they learnt in school to company and investment analysis. We wanted this competition to give them a flavour of how these techniques are applied in the real world, both in their careers, and in their personal investment.'
