SingPost Enhancing Postal Service With More Than 200 Additional Postal Delivery Staff

Hiring up to 200 more delivery staff QC Officer Goh conducting checks on mail delivery performance

Singapore, 06 September 2014 - SingPost is committed to deliver the best possible service and is investing $100 million into postal and delivery infrastructure, extended operations and people. For instance, the S$45 million new integrated sorting machines when fully operational at the end of the year will increase letter sorting capacity by 17% and mechanisation rate to 95%, improving efficiency and accuracy at the same time. This translates into better mail quality and service for customers.

Strengthened postal workforce to improve mail service delivery

As part of its efforts to enhance service quality, SingPost is looking to hire more than 200 people to join its postal workforce as delivery staff or Quality Control (QC) officers. Currently SingPost has 1,200 delivery staff and the additional 15% postal staff will boost existing strength to serve the increase in population and new housing estates.
SingPost will be more than tripling its current pool of 25 QC officers so that every postal sector has a dedicated QC officer. These QC officers will focus on the accuracy of mail delivery through checks and improvements to minimise human errors.

QC Officer Goh Leng Yong, 65 years old and a pioneer generation, said: "I have been checking the mail delivery performance of Sector 52 i.e. Tampines and Simei for more than 2 years. Some people are curious when they see me checking the letters. I explained to them that as a QC officer our job is to check on the last mile delivery quality of the postmen and ensure mail security. We also ensure that the masterdoor is secure, and carry out uncomplicated repairs which may be required on-the-spot even though the maintenance of letterboxes is not under SingPost's purview. This is not just a job. We are serving the public and I know that I make a difference."
He added, "My job offers flexi work hours. I am still very fit, being a QC officer allows me to stay fit and healthy as well as economically active. I like my job and will continue as long as I'm healthy and fit and can still contribute."

Replacing fleet with new 3-wheeler scooters

To cater to the changing mail profile, SingPost will gradually replace its fleet with three- wheeler scooters. In 2011, SingPost introduced three-wheeler scooters as they are easier and more stable for postmen to handle compared to the two-wheeler scooters, and hence improve work safety. Productivity of mail delivery is also boosted as they come with a bigger pannier box allowing postmen to carry more items and reducing the number of return trips to the delivery bases.
Recently, SingPost introduced the second generation three-wheeler scooters which come with a windscreen, a sun roof, an enlarged pannier box, four compartment boxes and a stronger horsepower. The enlarged pannier box and the four compartment boxes together provide 25 per cent more storage space than the first generation three-wheeler scooters.
Postman Kamarol Zamal B Atan, 50, who started to deliver mail since he was 20 years old, saw how the changing times have affected the mail profile. Postman Kamarol said: "We used to deliver more letters than parcels but increasingly, we are delivering more bulky items these days due to online shopping. The second-generation three-wheeler scooters will help me to pack more parcels and make more deliveries at one go."
