Sirona Dental Systems and Straumann have signed a collaboration agreement that enables dental practices to produce individualized implant prosthetics chairside using Straumann Variobases supported by Sirona’s CEREC system. At the same time, Sirona lab customers will be able to use Straumann’s centralized milling option as a ‘trusted partner’ in the Sirona inLab workflow.

Salzburg. CEREC is the leading chairside CAD/CAM system offering solutions for restorations, orthodontics and implantology. In the latter category CEREC has introduced innovative workflows allowing for the chairside production of customized implant abutments and crowns.

Straumann is the leading manufacturer of dental implants for which it offers a comprehensive range of abutments to connect the implant with the prothestic crown, bridge or denture. The company also offers high-precision CAD/CAM prosthetics that are produced at its milling centers and can be ordered through its open software platform.

In recent years, the workflow for customized abutments made from titanium bases (TiBases) with a bonded, individualized ceramic top have gained significant popularity amongst CEREC and inLab users. This workflow enables dentists and dental labs to produce cost-effective CAD/CAM prosthetics for a variety of implant systems.

Sirona supports its customers by enabling them to choose between TiBases manufactured by Sirona or those produced by the original implant manufacturer. Sirona is pleased to announce that it is expanding its offering for Straumann implants to include TiBases manufactured by Straumann and marketed as part of the Variobase family in its CEREC/inLab workflow for customized abutments in a software-update planned for early 2016.

Jeff Slovin, CEO of Sirona commented: “We are pleased with the fast growing acceptance of the customized abutment workflow in CEREC and inLab based on Sirona´s TiBase family. Sirona will continuously expand its offering of proven digital solutions to both our CEREC and inLab customers to better serve them and improve patient care. Our new collaboration with Straumann will provide CEREC and inLab users a choice between Sirona´s TiBases and Straumann´s Variobases for CEREC, when they create customized abutments with CEREC or inLab. As part of this cooperation, our inLab users will also have the choice to order high-end prosthetics from Straumann´s milling centers in Germany, the US, Japan and Brazil based on a validated workflow.”

In a second agreement, the companies have settled mutual patent disputes, allowing Sirona to continue offering its own existing TiBase design for Straumann implants and permitting Straumann to use Sirona’s mirror anatomy software functionality for designing prosthetic teeth in its CAD/CAM CARES Visual software.
