A survey conducted by Solucom

The digital revolution is forcing all businesses to adapt, renew and innovate. The major changes taking place in organisations are both internal and external. To support and spearhead this transformation, Solucom firmly believes that the HR department has a major role to play. But are businesses really aware of this? What impact is digital technology having on organisations, developments in the HR profession, and employee expectations? What part can human resources play in this upheaval?

This was the theme of the Solucom 2014 survey based on statements from 200 HR managers. The findings provide an overview of the situation and, significantly, help identify the fundamental requirements for this transformation.

Are HR departments lagging behind in the digital transformation of businesses?

90% of respondents consider digital technology to be a matter of importance for their organisation, but only 17% say they have a specific digital HR strategy… Even more surprising: only 4% feel they have a totally clear picture of the new digitally oriented lines of business. The figures from our survey reveal that HR departments do indeed wish to support the digital transformation of their enterprises but are not adequately prepared for the task. In short, HR departments still have a long way to go before being ready to shake up their established models and are instead maintaining their current arrangements for taking digital transformation on board.

10 commandments to make the HR department an engine of digital transformation

On the basis of these results, Solucom can strongly recommend a three-pronged approach. HR departments must first anticipate the switch to digital and not merely accompany it. Overcoming the digital divide is another essential requirement for HR departments if they are to ensure future social cohesion within their companies. Finally, to support management in facing up to these changes, HR departments will have to adapt their mode of governance and put in place a fully fledged HR digital transformation manager.

On the strength of its convictions, Solucom has defined the 10 commandments of the digital HR department, i.e.10 strategic priorities that will make the HR department a strategic and operational partner in the digital transformation of businesses. Solucom discussed these in detail on 26 November during its participation in HR Speaks 2014.
