Lille, April 25, 2017 --- Solvay is exhibiting at the Plant Based Summit in Lille, France, from 25 through 27 April 2017. The Group stands out as a major player in the area of chemistry from renewable raw materials. As a co-founder of the Chimie du Végétal (plant based chemistry) association that organizes this not-to-be-missed exhibition focused on the biobased economy, Solvay intends to build a sustainable chemistry model to address global environmental challenges and has thus made sustainable chemistry a main focus of innovation and growth.

'We innovate to create eco-efficient products and processes thanks to our expertise in organic chemistry, catalysis and biotechnology,' explains Sergio Mastroianni, Initiative Leader, Solvay Research and Innovation, who added: 'Our researchers worldwide are focusing on the development of products with unprecedented functionalities from renewable raw materials, and plants in particular.'

The Solvay booth (D12) is organized around two main themes: first, Solvay's biobased solutions, in general, and secondly, a close-up look at guar. More specifically, Solvay is exhibiting a dozen biobased products in the form of polymers and materials, surfactants, solvents, monomers and flavors under the following brand names: Augéo®, Jaguar® Line, Kalix®, Polycare® Split Therapy, Rhodapex®, Rhodoclean®, Rhovanil® Natural, and Technyl® eXten.

'We seek to exploit the specific characteristics of bio-resources, from which we create new uses for our customers as cost effectively as possible, while reducing the environmental footprint of their products,' adds François Monnet, Solvay's Renewable Chemistry Director and President of ACDV (plant based chemistry association).

Biobased products exhibited at the Plant Based Summit 2017

  • A product based on derivatives of castor oil

Technyl® eXten (PA610) and Kalix® HPPA are made of polyamides formulated from sebacic acid derived from castor oil. Their high-performance specifications are put to good use in many different markets, such as the automotive, electronics, in particular for smart mobile electronic devices and medical markets. They are ideal for applications calling for a high-level of technical standards.

  • Biobased solvents from glycerol

Augéo® is a solvent produced in Brazil from glycerol of plant origin and used to enhance the miscibility of various liquids. It is found in paints, for example, and in aerosols for cosmetics.

  • A flavor/fragrance for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals

In 2014, Solvay obtained the FSSC 22000 Food Safety System certification for its Rhovanil® Natural vanillin manufactured at its French production facility in Melle, which is obtained by bioconversion of ferulic acid extracted from rice bran.

  • A large family of natural polymers, surfactants and rheological agents

Jaguar® Line, a polymer sourced from Guar seeds is a natural polysaccharide with exceptional properties that can modify the rheology of many cosmetic and personal care products. For the record, Guar seeds have been harvested by the farmers of South Asia for centuries.

  • Polycare® Split Therapy is a new care for split ends made from Guar polymers, which is easy to use and compatible with shampoos, conditioners and serums.
  • Rhodapex® ESB 70 NAT, surfactant, sourced 100% from biobased sugar cane, is used as cleansing agent in shampoos, in particular.
  • Rhodoclean® is a surfactant derived from pine derivatives for use in industrial metal cleaners.
