New Record For Vija Celmins

24 September 2014 - Today at Sotheby's the sale Contemporary Curated Featuring WorksFrom The Collection Of Joni Gordon Of Newspace Gallery brought a total of $28,267,065, soaring over the pre-sale estimate of $15.8/22.7 million with 80% of lots sold. There was significant participation from Asia and Latin America as well as from the US and over 10% of bids were made online. The sale was led by the most important group of works by Vija Celmins to ever appear at auction, these included the seminal painting Burning Plane from
1965 which soared over the high estimate of $1.2 million to sell for $3,413,000. Other
memorable results from the Joni Gordon collection included the early John Baldessari work
18th and Highland, National City which sold for $509,000 (est. $180/250,000) as well as a series of pieces by John McLaughlin. Elsewhere in the sale Philip Guston's Magician's Table fetched $653,000 (est. $250/350,000) and an Untitled Keith Haring from 1988 sold for $2,741,000 - one of the highest prices achieved for the artist at auction.
Alexander Rotter, Co-Head of Sotheby's Worldwide Contemporary Art Department, commented: "Today's result shows that the global collecting community will go to great lengths to secure museum-quality works from artists or periods that rarely appear at auction. This hunger was seen with the extraordinary result of the Joni Gordon Collection. The Los Angeles gallerist used her brilliant vision and personal friendships with artists to build a formidable personal collection, works from which continually exceeded expectations."
