WITH GUEST CURATOR ANYA HINDMARCH

AUCTION 20 SEPTEMBER 2016

August 2016: This autumn, Sotheby's is opening up its galleries to Anya Hindmarch, inviting the leading fashion accessories designer to guest-curate an auction of Contemporary Art in London. A passionate advocate of British design and arts, Anya's take will add a fresh and innovative perspective to the exhibition, which will run from 16-19 September to coincide with London Fashion Week.

A trustee of both the Royal Academy of Arts and the Design Museum, Anya's passion for the arts runs through all that she does, from outstanding craftsmanship to witty and creative interpretations of Pop Art. Hand- picking the works that inspire her as both a designer and art-collector, she presents a range of artworks by leading Contemporary artists including Keith Haring, Andreas Gursky, Tracy Emin and Yayoi Kusama.

"I think what really drives a great art collector is passion, you've got to love it and the impulse has got to be authentic. I know when I see a beautiful piece or something that affects me I can't not have it.

I love the way Contemporary Curated brings together a new audience and allows people to look at a very personal edit - It's an amazing opportunity to be able to pick what you really love and really respond to. "

CONTEMPORARY CURATED AT A GLANCE

KEITH HARING Untitled, 1982

Estimate £200,000-300,000

ANDREAS GURSKY Gardasee, 1986-93

Estimate £40,000-60,000

" The Keith Haring is such a vibrant piece that you can really spend time looking at closely, absorbing all the energy and joy in the wonderfully mesmerising graphics. It's very unapologetic - I love the neon pink and the fluidity of the paint which makes it so immediate and exciting "

" This photograph makes you really look twice - it's quite surreal and deceptive which really draws you in - the more you look the more you become captivated by the artist's investigations into photography. "

YAYOI KUSAMA Sea at Sunset, 1980 Estimate £6,000-8,000

" I think Kusama is an amazingly strong woman with a very particular set of fascinating characteristics, which clearly works into her art and only makes it more interesting. This early small work is a lovely example of her highly unique technique - it's intriguing and beautiful. "

GERHARD RICHTER Untitled, 2001

Estimate £45,000-45,000

" The colours here are so beautiful - they're bold but actually really subtle at the same time. The mixing of two such important mediums for the artist is also very interesting - the glimpse of the photograph left unpainted in the background is very intriguing and the rich application of paint is very palpable. It's very reflective - I'll have that please!. "

EDDIE PEAKE Tomboy I, 2012

Estimate £10,000-15,000

" I think the playfulness of this painting really appeals to me because we play a lot obviously with fashion and the smiley face is one of our signifying pieces. It feels contemporary and vibrant and it's a complete show- stopper in a room - I love it. "

THOMAS RUFF h.t.b. 02, 1999

Estimate £18,000-25,000

" I like the way the photograph is rather nostalgic to the period of the architecture and that the colours are beautifully played with which is rather lovely. The scale is also wonderfully impressive - I could happily live with that. "

YAKOI KUSAMA

Fear of Death, 2008

Estimate £250,000-350,000

SAM FRANCIS Untitled, 1977 Estimate £25,000-35,000

" I love the colours used in this painting, there's a wonderful spontaneity to them. I think in

a way I would always much rather have a simple room and just let the art speak. Colour for me has a very significant effect on mood - often I'll have a stab of colour somewhere and it really lifts me. I really love the blue, it looks like a beautiful ink stain. "

TRACEY EMIN Selfie I, 2014

Estimate £2,000-3,000

WOLFGANG TILLMANS Lighter, Blue Concave III, 2010 Estimate £18,000-25,000

" The depth of colour is amazing - the fact that it doesn't look like a photograph in a way and that is has a certain physicality is rather wonderful. Tillmans really pushes the boundaries of photography and it seems as though this work falls into another category of its very own. "

OLAFUR ELIASSON Who is afraid flower ball, 2006 Estimate £40,000-60,000

" I love that this work is called Selfie as well as being a bit naughty - and what's not to love about Tracey! She's fantastic, there's a spirit about this picture which is very captivating. "

" I talk about mood altering a lot because for me art does that, it can physically touch you- and this work does just that. "
