Design In Situ
- SOULAGES, DUNAND, LALANNE, NOLL,
RUHLMANN, TCHELITCHEW -
Paris, June 2018: Every piece is intended to enter the home of the aesthetes who chose them, and to blend in with the subtle harmony of their interior design. Taste is what gives a collector's sale a specific savour - which the Design In Situ auction aims to recapture. This new concept presents an eclectic selection of furniture, design and paintings in a setting that

could be the home of any collector: contemporary interiors where 20th century creations resonate with each other and take on a new dimension.
In both the catalogue and pre-sale exhibition, the works are presented in situ, in settings combining modernity and classicism. Designed by Elie Massaoutis, international specialist at Sotheby's Design Department, the staging gives potential buyers the opportunity to imagine themselves in an interior with an inimitably Parisian feel.
This sale is a way to recreate a familiar environment, but also a good opportunity to combine design, works of art and paintings in a similar way to the NOW! sales. With their multiple yet similar styles of modernity, these various collecting categories were inspired and mutually influenced by each other during the last century. This highly attractive sale, aimed at experienced collectors and beginners alike, is conducive to discovery, excitement and love at first sight. The new format offers indeed highly authentic items at more affordable prices than the remarkable works of art featured in the major seasonal sales.
Outstanding pieces include a Main Culbuto, a one-of-a-kind piece in silver-plated metal by François-Xavier Lalanne (estimate: €30,000-50,000) from 1965. It encapsulates all the lyricism and poetry of the artist's work, who had given it to the interior designer Alain
Demachy, predicting his coming success: "This hand is for you. Place it at the back of your yacht when you will have one, so that it can wave goodbye to your guests as they leave your boat."
A vibrant pastel by Pavel Tchelitchew, L'homme à la houpe (estimate: €30,000-50,000) rubs shoulders with an etching by Pierre Soulages, Eau-Forte XXII (estimate: €20,000-30,000) and
an ebony sculpture by Alexandre Noll (estimate: €15,000-20,000).
There will be an incursion into the meditative world of sculptor Emile Giglioli with two polished bronze works: La Poupée (estimate: €30,000-50,000) and Soleil de Vie (estimate: €25,000-35,000).
And lastly, two gilded wood and patinated bronze double-doors by Jean Dunand and Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann (estimate: €80,000-120,000) will close on this ideal apartment.
