Auction 23 & 24 October

NEW YORK, 17 October 2017 - Sotheby's is delighted to announce the full offerings of this season's auction of Important Prints & Multiples in New York. Drawing mainly from private collections, the sale is highlighted by the Collection of Catherine Woodard and Nelson Blitz, Jr., featuring a fantastic group of works by Edvard Munch, and the Collection of Marina Picasso, featuring over 80 prints by her grandfather Pablo Picasso. Totaling over 400 lots that range in date from the 19th century through to the present day, the auction will take place in New York on 23 and 24 October. The exhibition will open to the public on 20 October.

Asssembled over 50 years, The Collection of Catherine Woodard and Nelson Blitz, Jr. specializes in late 19th and early 20th century works of art. The selection being offered at Sotheby's this October focuses on four master printmakers: Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Ludwig Kirchner and Jasper Johns. The group is led by an astonishingly beautiful mezzotint and drypoint, Young Woman on the Beach: The Lonely One (Sch. 42; W. 49) by Edvard Munch (left, estimate $3/4 million); an extremely rare impression - one of 12 recognized by Woll, the work exemplifies the artist's unparalleled ability to depict isolation

and solitude. (separate release available)

Following the success of Sotheby's auction Picasso Man & Beast: Works from the Collection of Marina Picasso in May this year - in which all 111 lots sold and significantly surpassed pre-sale expectations - 81 prints from the Collection of Marina Picasso, granddaughter of Pablo Picasso, will be auctioned on 23 October. The group is led by Sabartés avec deux femmes: eight states (Ba. 1060) (right, estimate

$40/60,000). A complete set, the works feature the Spanish Catalan artist, poet and author Jaime Sabartés, who was not only a close friend of Picasso but also his secretary and administrator for his exhibitions.

Private collections are also responsible for many of the auction's highlights from the 21st century. Considered an icon of postwar printing in America, Richard Diebenkorn's Green is a showcase of the artist's achievement in printmaking; its monumental size, balanced composition, layers of abstraction and brilliant color all factor into labeling this work his largest and most important print (previous page left, estimate, $400/600,000). Anatomy: 18 Prints by Jean-Michel Basquiat, the first portfolio of prints by the artist, is another milestone work. Rendered in white against a black background, the various body parts and their corresponding labels are reminiscent of x-rays and demonstrate the artist's interest in anatomy. Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner, this complete set of 18 carries a pre-sale estimate of $300/500,000 (pictured previous page right).

Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup I (F. & S. II. 44-53) is another complete set by a major American artist (estimate $500/700,000). In pristine condition, this vibrant group of ten features an image synonymous with Warhol and the Pop Art movement: the Campbell Soup can. Representative of his positive view of modernity, and emblematic of his commentary on consumerism, this icon has stood the test of time and remains as desirable as ever. Overall, Important Prints & Multiples features numerous works by Andy Warhol, including Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn) (Feldman & Schellmann II.31) (estimate $120/180,000). Coming to auction from a private collection in Maryland, the 36 by 36 screenprint is a beautiful and iconic work of art.

The October auction of prints & multiples also includes a significant work by American printmaker and designer, Blanche Lazzell. A founder of the Provincetown Printers who experimented with white- line woodcuts and a proponent of Cubism and abstraction, Lazzell was an early American modernist. The Fatio House is a prime example of both her technique and expertise in the medium (left, estimate $150/200,000). One of only two existing impressions of this extremely rare print, in which segments were inked individually using French watercolors, the work is being offered with its original woodblock.
