Sotheby's London Wine Sale Achieves Above-Estimate £2.9 / $3.9 Million

Exceptional Whisky: 'The Dalmore 62', The 12 Pointer sells for £91,650

'This week's auction saw a triumphant start to our autumn wine season in London. The £2.9 million achieved marked Sotheby's second highest total for a wine auction staged in London. There was huge global demand with over 250 bidders and buyers from 24 countries and the interest was such that the sale could have been sold eight times over. The tone was set by An Important Private Collection featuring over 300 lots of magnificent Bordeaux, Burgundy and Italian wines. First Growth Bordeaux including the superlative 2000 vintage and Burgundy from Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Domaine Leflaive and other great producers realised astonishing prices. Large formats of impeccably stored, mature Bordeaux from an impressive cellar attracted fierce bidding and were led by a double magnum of Lafleur 1982 which sold well above its high estimate. From the same cellar, strong prices were achieved for Grand Marque Champagne, including Krug, Cristal and Salon. The highest price of the day was achieved for a bottle of The Dalmore 62, The 12 Pointer, which soared to £91,650, well over the high estimate of

Sotheby's autumn season of wine auctions in London opened on 20 September with a spectacular result for a sale of Finest and Rarest Wines, Spirits & Vintage Port. With a total of £2,897,656 ($3,911,836) - far exceeding the pre-sale estimate of £1.9-2.4 million - and a sell-through rate by lot of 99%, the auction was led by exceptional whisky, First Growth Bordeaux and Grands Cru Burgundy from the finest domaines.

A bottle of The Dalmore, The 12 Pointer, Aged 62 Years, commanded the top price when it sold for £91,650, almost double estimate. One of just 12 released in 2002, this 'liquid gold' was presented in a beautiful wooden case, with a certificate signed by master distiller, Richard Paterson.

Burgundy was very much in demand, as demonstrated by DRC's Romanée Conti, when a six bottle case of the 2004 vintage sold for £61,100 (est. £38,000-48,000), swiftly followed by a three bottle lot of the 2005 vintage which achieved £56,400 (est. £24,000-30,000). Across the board, mature Bordeaux performed well, with Mouton and Petrus 2000 hitting the high notes.

Sotheby's forthcoming wine auctions include Wines from the Cellar of FUX Restaurant in Hong Kong on 30 September, Magnificent Wines from the Park B. Smith Collection in New York on 11 November, and Finest and Rarest Wines in London on 15 November, which we are excited to announce will feature an important collection of DRC and Rousseau.

Notes to Editors

Sotheby's Wine auctions in 2016 brought a worldwide total of $74 million. Sotheby's overall total of $88.27 million for global wine auctions in 2010 is the highest in the company's forty-six years of wine auctions.

The Lafite Ex Cellars sale held by Sotheby's in Hong Kong in October 2010 set a new record for a single standard sized bottle at auction when a bottle of Château Lafite 1869 sold for $232,692. This means that Sotheby's now hol ds the worl d records for a sta ndard bottle, a bottle in any format - the Jeroboam of Château Mouton Rothschild 1945 which fetched $310,700 in February 2007 in New York - and any wine lot at auction - the Romanée-Conti Superlot (114 bottles) which sold for HK$12,556,250 (US$1,609,776) at Sotheby's Hong Kong in October 2014.

Sotheby's holds the record for a wine collection sold at auction. Wines from the Cellar of William I. Koch (New York, 19-21 May 2016) brought a total of $21.9 million, with 100% lots sold.

Between 2009 and October 2011 Sotheby's Hong Kong maintained 16 consecutive 100%-sold wine auctions in Asia - the only major auction house with this record.
