Home of One of World's Largest Hadoop Clusters Implements Splunk Software

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Splunk Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLK), provider of the leading software platform for real-time Operational Intelligence, today announced that Yahoo has implemented Hunk®: Splunk Analytics for Hadoop and NoSQL Data Stores and Splunk® Enterprise. With a Hunk enterprise adoption license, Yahoo employees use Hunk to explore, analyze and visualize data from its Hadoop environment, which stores more than 600 petabytes of data. Yahoo teams are also analyzing more than 150 terabytes of machine data per day in Splunk Enterprise for use cases including IT operations, applications delivery, security and business analytics.

"Splunk Enterprise and Hunk help us gain insights into all of our data, whether it is streaming in real time or historical data at rest," said Ian Flint, monitoring architect, Yahoo. "Hunk gives Yahoo deep visibility into our massive Hadoop data stores to help us continuously optimize operational performance. Insights we gain from Hunk help us save millions of dollars per year in hardware provisioning. Splunk Enterprise helps us to maximize revenue by giving product and business teams better insight into our customers, the user experience and any looming issues."

Hunk is a full-featured, integrated analytics platform built so everyone in an organization can interactively explore, analyze and visualize big data, regardless of where the data is stored. Hunk was brought into Yahoo to track and improve the overall performance and stability of its grid system. With a focus on expanding Hunk in a self-service fashion across the enterprise, Yahoo is currently using Hunk in its grid operations group in addition to several other product teams. Hunk helps Yahoo track system metrics from all of its clusters by region, visually browse complex tables, gain historical resource insights, improve data job service level agreements (SLAs), cut down development cycles, and search and troubleshoot IT issues in the grid system in real time.

Yahoo has been a Splunk customer for several years and is also using Splunk Enterprise to help the company's IT operations, infrastructure, products and security teams gain insights into Yahoo's product lines. Users analyze and visualize real-time and historical data to learn about customer preferences, user experience, click rates, performance and IT workflow issues, advertising and marketing campaign popularity, product feature usage and more. Yahoo's expansion to an enterprise adoption license for Splunk Enterprise will empower more business and product teams to gain even more insights from Yahoo's massive amounts of business and operational data.

"Yahoo is the birthplace of Hadoop, and it is a great honor for Hunk to play such a critical role in Yahoo's business and its Hadoop deployment," said Shay Mowlem, vice president of product marketing, Splunk. "With hundreds of Splunk users across dozens of teams using Hunk and Splunk Enterprise, Yahoo's enterprise adoption agreement with Splunk is proof of the value Splunk software is delivering to Yahoo."

Download Splunk Enterprise or try it as a cloud service through a Free Online Sandbox. Download Hunk for a 60-day free trial and in less than one hour, be up and running to explore, analyze and visualize your data in Hadoop. Hunk is also available directly from the Amazon Elastic MapReduce (Amazon EMR) console and priced on an hourly basis.
