"Splunk Hadoop Connect makes it easier for Hadoop users to leverage Splunk in bringing big data to the enterprise," said Arun Murthy, chair of the Apache Hadoop Project Management Committee. "It brings the Splunk and Hadoop communities closer together, opening up exciting possibilities. Software that works in conjunction with Hadoop to gain insight from data is a critical factor in Hadoop's future as a technology."

"We continuously stream data to Splunk to support and provide insights to our operations, applications, security teams and executives. We are also deploying Hadoop for additional batch analytics," said John Martin, senior director of production engineering, Edmunds.com. "The Splunk-Hadoop integrations will enable us to make the best use of both technologies and keep our Hadoop clusters running smoothly."

Splunk Hadoop Connect enables organizations to benefit from the best of both worlds. Quickly deploy Splunk software for real-time collection, indexing, analysis and visualizations and then reliably forward events to Hadoop for long-term archiving and additional batch analytics. Organizations can further leverage Splunk by importing data already stored in Hadoop. This makes it easy to stand up reliable, secure, enterprise-grade big data projects in days instead of months. Splunk Hadoop Connect is compatible with Apache Hadoop and has been tested and certified against Cloudera CDH and Hortonworks HDP distributions.

The Splunk App for HadoopOps provides real-time end-to-end monitoring, analysis and troubleshooting for Hadoop, all from one interface. Existing Hadoop monitoring tools focus just on the Hadoop layer. The Splunk App for HadoopOps goes beyond that by encompassing all layers of the infrastructure, including Hadoop, the network, switch, rack, operating system and database.

"Splunk customers amaze us every day by turning big data into instant insight, and we wanted to make it easier for Hadoop users to get this kind of value," said Sanjay Mehta, vice president of product marketing, Splunk. "Splunk software is the easy, fast and resilient way to collect, analyze and secure all of your machine-generated data, whether it's in a physical, virtual or cloud environment. Splunk Hadoop Connect and the Splunk App for HadoopOps are developed with a common purpose, to help Hadoop users get more from their data while making it easier to manage and monitor their systems."

"Splunk has taken a methodological approach to defining its co-existence with Hadoop," said Matt Aslett, research manager, data management and analytics, 451 Research. "The ability of Splunk Hadoop Connect to not only integrate with Hadoop but also interact with it, along with the potential use of Splunk App for HadoopOps to monitor cluster resources beyond Hadoop itself, suggests an expanded role in providing a single platform for managing and analyzing data in both Splunk and Hadoop."

Splunk Hadoop Connect features provide the ability to:

  • Export events reliably from Splunk Enterprise to Hadoop for archiving, further processing or additional batch analytics. Data can be sent raw or pre-processed.
  • Explore Hadoop directories, examine files and decide on data to import into Splunk using the Splunk Hadoop Connect user interface.
  • Import and index Hadoop data into Splunk to make it available for searching, reporting, analysis and visualizations and protect it with role-based access controls.

The Splunk App for HadoopOps features include:

  • End-to-end monitoring and troubleshooting of Hadoop cluster, database and networks in addition to multi-cluster management from different data centers.
  • Powerful alerting framework for any warning or error conditions.
  • Centralized real-time view of Hadoop nodes using intuitive heatmap display.
  • Analysis of real-time and historical MapReduce job performance.

Splunk Hadoop Connect and the Splunk App for HadoopOps are available as free downloads on Splunkbase.
