Chief executive tops CR Magazine's list of responsible corporate leaders

Corporate Responsibility Magazine and the COMMIT!Forum today announced that Dan Hesse, the Chief Executive Officer of Sprint (NYSE:S) will receive the 2013 Corporate Responsibility Lifetime Achievement Award.

Hesse will accept the award tonight at the 2013 COMMIT!Forum in New York City. CR Magazine's Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual whose risk-taking, vision and pioneering spirit have led to significant achievement in the field over the course of their career.

"As we considered the candidates for this year's Lifetime Achievement Award, Dan Hesse was a natural choice," said Elliot Clark, CEO of SharedXpertise, the publisher of Corporate Responsibility Magazine. "A publicly committed executive, Dan has demonstrated the role and impact of the responsible corporation through his vision and leadership."

"Combatting distracted driving, developing new services to better serve customers with disabilities and reducing our carbon footprint are examples of the ways we are trying to improve the quality of life for our customers," Hesse said.

Beginning in 2008, Hesse led the establishment of aggressive 10-year goals that could reduce the company's environmental footprint. Since then, Sprint has made substantial progress against these goals and has been widely recognized for their efforts on climate change, phone recycling, and offering eco-friendly phones to its customers.

Sprint's impact on accessibility solutions has not gone unnoticed. As the first Fortune 500 CEO to address this year's annual M-Enabling conference, Hesse discussed the importance of providing accessibility solutions for customers with disabilities. Today, Sprint provides relay services in 33 states, exclusively for the federal government, as well as in New Zealand. Last month, Sprint launched the Kyocera Kona, the first feature phone in the industry to offer verbal translation enabling Internet browsing for customers with low vision. Driving the company's focus around accessibility has been a personal passion for Hesse. His maternal grandmother, who lived with him while he was growing up, was blind. To combat distracted driving, Sprint developed Sprint Drive First, a smartphone application that locks the device when a car is travelling more than 10 mph, directs incoming calls to voicemail and silences alerts for emails and text messages. Sprint Drive First is free to Sprint customers.

Sprint's commitment to corporate responsibility is demonstrated through its Good Works program which is focused on driving positive change in three critical areas: people, product and planet. The good works Sprint and its employees do every day continues to receive recognition. Last year, Newsweek named the company third among America's Greenest Companies, the only telecommunications company to receive a top 25 ranking on the survey. Last month Sprint received two top honors as the only telecommunications company named to CDP's S&P 500 Climate Performance Leadership Index (CPLI), which highlights companies that demonstrate strategies committed to improving their impact on the environment. Sprint was also named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) North America, which tracks the corporate sustainability performance of the top 20 percent of the 600 largest companies by industry in the United States and Canada. Earlier this year, Sprint was named the Marketplace winner at the U.S. Disability Matters Awards, one of the most important Corporate Awards in the U.S., for delivering innovative accessibility solutions that empower people with disabilities.
