Design firm Stantec captured two awards at the 16th Quebec Consulting Engineering Awards Gala. Stantec's honours included the ceremony's most prestigious distinction―the Visionary Award―for Stantec's Parcours Gouin Trail Net-Zero Energy Reception Pavilion in Montreal. Stantec was also recognized in the Project Management category for its contribution to Montreal's new AZUR subway car project. More than 300 consulting engineering leaders and professionals, as well as clients and industry partners, attended the gala, held May 14 in Montreal.

Parcours Gouin Trail Net-Zero Energy Reception Pavilion
One of 33 nominated projects, the Parcours Gouin Trail Net-Zero Reception Pavilion received the Visionary Award, highlighting the project's innovation, boldness, and proactive approach to sustainable development.

To revitalize the Parcours Gouin Trail sector, the City of Montreal's Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough decided to build a new reception pavilion to serve one million visitors annually. Stantec provided the mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineering services for this unique and avant-garde project. The Stantec team designed an intelligent and extremely energy-efficient building with a net-zero energy objective, meaning that it produces as much energy as it consumes. Offering a range of services and diversified programs, the pavilion also serves as a technological and educational showcase, promoting sustainable development to Montreal's population.

'Our Quebec team is very proud to bring the City of Montreal's first net-zero building to life, balancing LEED Gold certification requirements,' said Stantec's Marc Perreault, regional vice president, buildings and industry - Quebec. 'Thanks to its energy-saving measures, solar panels, and geothermal system, the project confirms our team's leadership in designing high-performance, sustainable buildings. The project clearly fulfilled its educational mission―to raise awareness about sustainable development issues.'

Montreal's AZUR Subway Cars
Stantec was also recognized in the Project Management category, for Montreal's new AZUR subway cars. As part of its subway network modernization plan, the Montreal Transit Corporation (STM) wanted to update its fleet of cars, many of which dated back to the network's 1966 inauguration. The STM partnered with the Groupement DST joint venture (Stantec, SNC-Lavalin, and AECOM), led by Stantec, for support in managing this massive project to acquire and commission new subway cars. Since February 2016, transit users have been enjoying the ultra-modern, environmentally friendly, and comfortable AZUR cars, which meet the industry's highest standards. Once the project is completed, by the end of 2018, 54 trains (486 cars) will be in service.

'With AZUR, no aspect of the design was left to chance. We had to meet the heightened requirements of the STM and its subway clientele-from the train's improved interior ergonomics and comfort, to its intelligent systems, adapted maintenance workshop, and development of training programs for car operators,' said Martin Thibault, Stantec's regional vice president, transportation - Quebec. 'By ensuring smoother rides, thanks to AZUR, our team has been instrumental in improving the quality of life for the community while increasing the appeal of public transit. We are very happy to contribute our cutting-edge expertise in managing large-scale engineering and transportation system projects, and thereby helping to modernize public transit in the Montreal area.'

Awarded annually by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies of Quebec (AFG), the Quebec Consulting Engineering Awards promote best practices in project execution. Project evaluation criteria include innovation, complexity, and sustainable development, with the winning projects chosen by an independent jury
