INDIANAPOLIS, IN--(Marketwired - Jun 11, 2014) - Stericycle ExpertSOLUTIONS™ (NASDAQ: SRCL) today released the findings of its Q1 2014 Stericycle European Recall and Notification Index, which revealed a significant uptick in activity related to consumer products.

Consumer product notifications increased 35 percent year-over-year from the first quarter of 2013. This category was responsible for 38 percent of all notifications issued in Europe in the first quarter of 2014Index analysis reveals that, during the first three months of the year, there was an average of eight consumer product notifications throughout Europe every week. Toys, clothing, textiles/fashion, electrical appliances/equipment, and cosmetics and childcare articles/equipment were the leading product types, accounting for 74 percent of all notifications issued in the consumer products category.

The Q1 2014 Stericycle European Recall and Notification Index found that the increase in activity experienced within the consumer goods sector is not mirrored in the food industry. Food products remain the leading cause of notifications, however, the overall percentage of notifications is decreasing. In Q1 2014, food related notifications were responsible for 59 percent of the total number of product notifications. By contrast, the category was behind 67 percent of all notifications issued during the first three months of 2013.

The data also revealed an upward trend in the number of voluntary notifications, with the automotive industry among the top categories demonstrating a significant increase in Q1 2014. "Our European Index underscores that effective recall management is a reality of the global economy," said Mike Rozembajgier, vice president, Stericycle. "In this environment, manufacturers cannot afford to have a siloed view of their operations. It's critical that companies have insight into how regulatory requirements vary across geographies and are also prepared to manage the increasingly complex supply chain. Those that don't take the necessary steps to understand the industry's intricacies will be left vulnerable when a recall strikes."
