While many businesses are winding down in the lead up to Christmas, Stockland is ramping up work at its newest residential project in the greater Brisbane region - the $590 million waterfront Newport community.
The first sod has been turned at the bayside community which will feature almost 2,000 new homes, a village centre and a 23 hectare lake with high mast access to Moreton Bay.
Stockland paid $67 million for the 143-hectare development site which enjoys a prime position on the Redcliffe Peninsula.
Once complete, it is estimated the Newport waterfront lots and bayside residential areas will have a total value of $590 million.
Stockland Project Director, Adam Renai, said he was delighted that preliminary earthworks were now underway at the community which is just a short drive from Stockland's North Lakes and Stone Ridge Narangba communities.
'We are so excited that work has started on Newport as this is a very special project,'' said Mr Renai.
'Not only will Newport deliver a variety of innovative choices for new home buyers in the greater Brisbane region, the project is also expected to inject almost $1 billion of direct expenditure into the local region and the state over a 10 year period.'
Mr Renai said Stockland had commissioned Shadforths Civil Contractors to undertake the earthworks.
'We are expecting to see rapid changes at the site in the weeks ahead and in the lead up to the opening of the Newport Sales and Information Centre before mid- 2016.'

Stockland's vision for Newport is a connected community which encourages residents to be active and inclusive.

People will be able to choose from townhouses, terraces, units and villas, and free standing homes, and there are also plans for a modern retirement living offering. Home sites will include park frontage and lake frontage lots, however, all blocks will have easy access to the bay and open spaces.
Newport is less than an eight minute drive from North Lakes with its booming business park and town centre, which is fast becoming a commercial hub of the Moreton Bay Region.
Commuters will be able to walk to the new Kippa Ring Train Station, which is due to open in 2016. The train station is located just 800 metres away from the community.
Newport will also be serviced by existing transport infrastructure with nearby Griffith Road and Anzac Avenue connecting to Houghton Highway and the Bruce Highway.
