The COP21 climate change agreement in Paris last year has significantly increased interest in low-carbon solutions, and the transition towards an economy based on biological and renewable materials - the bioeconomy.

The forestry industry is at the heart of the bioeconomy. Stora Enso is focused on innovation in bio-based materials as well as working to build support for the bioeconomy in major world markets. The forestry industry has a great deal to offer as wood fibre-based products store carbon and can also replace non-renewable materials such as plastic, glass, steel, concrete and fossil fuels.

From trees to renewable products and regeneration in the form of new forest growth, the cycle continues. Stora Enso practices and promotes sustainable forestry and tree plantation management, and we re-grow more forests and plantations than we harvest. Furthermore, we utilise climate-friendly energy production as much as possible, and optimise our use of energy and raw materials in our production processes.

As a renewable materials company, we are committed to realising the full potential of renewable wood fibre-based materials with innovative products and technologies.

Everyone seems to be talking about the bioeconomy. Why is it important? Is it going to change way we live and are there any risks with it? We talk to Carina Håkansson Managing Director of the Swedish Forest Industries Federation and Marco Lucisano, Director for Papermaking and Packaging at the R&D company Innventia.
