  • New office and production buildings for Siemens Building Technologies in Zug, Switzerland
  • Office building to be built using BIM (Building Information Modelling)
  • Contract value of approx. € 100 million

Schlieren, 20 June 2016 STRABAG AG Switzerland, a subsidiary of STRABAG SE, has been awarded the contract to build an office building and a production building for Siemens in Zug, Switzerland.

The contract, which has a value of around € 100 million, will be carried out by STRABAG as design-and-build contractor and main contractor, respectively. The client, Siemens Real Estate, chose STRABAG also for its proven competence in Building Information Modelling (BIM).

"We are proud to be able to prove our know-how with this project in Switzerland in order to meet the high expectations of the client and the future user Siemens Building Technologies. BIM.5D®is the future of building. The aim of BIM is to digitally collect, combine and link all relevant data associated with the entire building lifecycle. This creates a building data model that basically is a giant synchronised database. Besides the geometric data, i.e. a 3D model of the building, BIM also includes non-geometric data such as detailed information regarding materials, costs or the programme of works. The model simulates for all involved how the building will change as construction progresses, which materials will be required in which quantities at what time, and what consequences could arise from late changes to the design," explains Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE. On the basis of this building data model, BIM.5D®guarantees a level of security in terms of cost, design and scheduling that has never before been seen in construction - and it does so at an early stage in the process.

The design and construction of the office building will be managed by the STRABAG project team, together with design and client representatives, during regular meetings in the so-called "Big Room" on the Siemens construction site. The seven-storey building will offer

- in addition to the office space - 31,700 m² of space on every floor for mechanical/electrical, seminar and conference rooms as well as an underground car park. The four-storey production building, being built under a traditional main contractor model, will comprise production halls, laboratories and offices on 24,000 m² of floor area. An automated transport and storage system will be included on the basement level. Both buildings are to be completed in June 2018.

Following completion, Siemens will continue to use the building data model in its facility management. BIM.5D®therefore optimises not only the design and construction phases of a building, but the operations phase as well.
