Seeking to enhance its production and sales capabilities on the African continent, SRI completed the acquisition of Apollo Tyres South Africa in December of 2013, launching its new business in Africa under the name Sumitomo Rubber South Africa.
Having relocated SRSA's head office from its previous location in South Durban to a new location in North Durban in order to strengthen the company's administrative and sales functions while also improving operational efficiency, SRI held an opening ceremony for the new head office on October 2 nd , inviting some 65 representatives from the local government and major business partners.
At the opening ceremony, President Ikeda of SRI announced an investment plan involving 1.1 billion rand (approx. 11 billion yen) of investments in SRSA's South Africa Factory. These investments aim to enhance the factory's production capacity from its current 9,600 tires/day to 12,200 tires/day in 2016 and 14,500 tires/day in 2017 while also improving product quality by focusing on production of high-performance tires. As a result, the Sumitomo Rubber Group will expand its tire sales business throughout the African continent and accelerate the pace of its global expansion.
