 (ASX: SUR) has spudded its first operated well, Jack Howe-1H, that targets the Lower Woodbine and underlying Buda Formations at its Normangee Oil Project, Texas.

This is promising given that both (NYSE: EOG) and Contango Oil and Gas (NYSE:MCF) have enjoyed good results drilling and completing Lower Woodbine laterals to the west and south of Normangee.

Contango notably enjoyed a 100% success rate with 11 of its 12 wells drilled in 2013 producing at an initial thirty day average production rate of 859 barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Normangee Oil Project

Sun, as operator of the 50% owned Normangee Oil Project in Madison County, spudded the Jack Howe-1H vertical pilot well on 15 April and expects to take about 15 days to drill to its target depth of about 8,550 feet (2,606 metres), core and evaluate the primary objectives of the Lower Woodbine and underlying Buda Formations.

The well is currently at a depth of 4,653 feet.

It is anticipated that a 5,000 feet plus lateral will be drilled and completed at the Jack Howe #1H location in the future pending the results of the coring.

Normangee covers 3,952 gross acres. The remaining 50% is held by Amerril Energy LLC.
