- Achieves current handling performance in excess of 900 Amps on a single wire -

AUSTIN, Texas, June 22, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Superconductor Technologies Inc. (STI) (Nasdaq:SCON), a world leader in the development and production of high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials and associated technologies, announced its Conductus® wire attained a new record for current handling performance of greater than 900 Amps at 77 kelvin in self field with 12 millimeter wide wire. This record breaking wire was produced with STI's new RCE production system.

"Our new production machine achieved a significant milestone by producing Conductus wire with current handling capacity that exceeds the past performance of our pilot equipment," stated Jeff Quiram, STI's president and chief executive officer. "This substantial accomplishment further demonstrates the effectiveness and scalability of STI's proprietary RCE-CDR process. We plan to utilize the production machine to fulfill existing orders and we expect to continue to increase the lengths of high-performance Conductus wire being shipped in the coming weeks."

STI continues to work closely with customers to complete Stage 2 qualification testing of Conductus wire for superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), cable and magnet applications. Since reporting first quarter results on May 12, 2015, STI has shipped the next round of finished wire to SFCL customers. The customer fabricating the high power superconducting cable demonstration project informed STI that, due to other lab commitments, it now expects to complete its evaluation in August.
