New ultrafast broadband switched on for testing

Service available from January

York on track to become UK's first Ultra Fibre Optic city

A retired schoolteacher from Rawcliffe is set to become the first person in York to receive Ultra Fibre Optic broadband from TalkTalk.

Derek Paterson of Ings View is amongst hundreds of residents and small businesses taking part in trials to test the new state-of-the-art broadband network that offers speeds 100 times faster than standard broadband.

The trialists will be putting all elements of the service through its paces ahead of it becoming widely available. Once testing is complete, anyone wishing to take Ultra Fibre Optic broadband from TalkTalk can do so for the same price as standard broadband, from January.

Mr Paterson commented: "I'm really excited to be part of this programme. Like most households, we're doing more and more online. It's not just the speed that's appealing, knowing that we can all do as much as we want online at the same time is also a huge advantage."

In providing the service at no extra cost, TalkTalk is the first and only UK broadband provider to offer pure fibre broadband all the way to the home for the same price as standard broadband, making it more accessible to those who may not have previously considered it.

Dido Harding, TalkTalk Chief Executive added: "Ultra Fibre Optic will truly transform the broadband experience in York and we've been blown away by the local support. For such a leap in performance you'd expect to pay more, but we believe ultrafast broadband should be available to everyone."

The network, built by TalkTalk in partnership with Sky and CityFibre, has now passed 1,800 homes within the Rawcliffe, Clifton, Huntington and the Groves areas of York.
