Brazil Domestic Air Traffic Demand Up 5.33% In April

05/28/2012 | 09:53am US/Eastern

Brazil domestic air traffic demand picked up 5.33% in April, for growth of 6.77% in the first four months of 2012, civil aviation authority Anac said Monday.

On the other hand, international flights dropped 1.49% in April from the year-earlier period. In the first four months, international flights increased just 1.75% from the year-ago period.

Tam SA (TAM, TAMSY, TAMM4.BR) and low-cost carrier Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes SA (GOL, GOLL4.BR) once again took the lion's share of the market, together accounting for more than 70% of all domestic flights. Azul, a relative newcomer started by JetBlue founder David Neeleman, was in third place with 9.94% of flights.

Tam maintained its market share in international routes, with about 90.3% of flights in April, while Gol saw its share at 9.73%.
