Tata Steel in association with Sports Authority of India (SAI) today inaugurated the Athletics and Boxing Extension Centre at JRD Tata Sports Complex. Mr Manmeet Singh Goindi, Director, Sports Authority of India, Eastern Region and Mr Sunil Bhaskaran, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Guest of Honor respectively.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Goindi said 'There is a lot of sporting talent in Jharkhand. The talent needs to be nourished with good coaching facilities to guide them in the right direction. I am thankful to Tata Steel Management for providing the opportunity to start an extension centre in Jamshedpur.' He further added that SAI is looking at establishing a full-fledged training centre in Jamshedpur.

While addressing the gathering Mr Bhaskaran said 'It gives me immense pleasure as we inaugurate the centre today. I look forward to this partnership between SAI and Tata Steel and I believe that the partnership will take sports in Jharkhand to the next level.'

The extension will be non-residential. In the first phase selection trials were conducted for athletics and boxing. 19 athletes and 21 boxers ranging from the age of 12 to 18 years were identified from Jamshedpur and surrounding areas. They were selected by the selection committee and approved by SAI for induction. The second phase will see the addition of extension centre for archery and football.

The extension centres are the result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SAI and Tata Steel signed on October 7, 2015 by Mr Injeti Sriniwas, Director General, Sports Authority of India and Mr T V Narendran, Managing Director, Tata Steel, India & SEA with the objective of strengthening development of athletics, archery, boxing and football at Jamshedpur.

SAI and Tata Steel will work jointly towards nurturing the identified trainees. SAI will provide qualified coaches, monthly stipend and kit to the trainees while Tata Steel will provide infrastructure for all sporting disciplines mentioned in the MoU.

Mr Ravi Radhakrishnan, Chief, Aviation Services & Sports, Tata Steel, Mr Mukul V Choudhari, Administrator, TFA & Sports, Tata Steel, Mr Madhukant Pathak, President, Jharkhand Olympics Association, Mr Uttam Singh, Secretary, Jharkhand Boxing Association and Chief, Blast Furnaces, Tata Steel, officers of Tata Steel and members of the sporting fraternity were also present during the ceremony.
