Puerto Rico native to lead the island's premiere shopping destination

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, June 16, 2015 - Hospitality industry veteran José A. Ayala Bonilla has been named general manager of The Mall of San Juan. Ayala Bonilla will lead operations, retailer and community relations and marketing when he takes the helm on Monday, June 22.

Ayala Bonilla is joining the center after 19 years with Starwood Hotels & Resorts where he worked in senior level operations and finance positions in Puerto Rico, Florida, Texas, Georgia and Alabama. He most recently served as director of operations for the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel. Prior to that, Ayala Bonilla started his hospitality career in Puerto Rico at the former Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort and he is looking forward to returning to the island for this next chapter.

"It is an honor to join the talented team at The Mall of San Juan," said Ayala Bonilla. "My new role is made even more exciting by the fact that I am returning to my native Puerto Rico. I am looking forward to reconnecting with my community."

Thousands of Puerto Rico residents and visitors were the first to shop The Mall of San Juan during its grand opening on March 26, 2015. The island's first upscale shopping center features a singular collection of retailers, more than 60 percent of which are unique-to-market, and the Caribbean's only Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue.

"We will continue to welcome the finest contemporary brands to the center, ensuring The Mall of San Juan remains Puerto Rico's most distinctive shopping and dining destination," added Ayala Bonilla.

A native of Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico, Ayala Bonilla holds a bachelor's degree in business administration and accounting from the University of Puerto Rico, and a master's in financial management from Interamerican University.
