Stevens Institute of Technology Hosting Event Sponsored By TD Ameritrade;Teams Use Latest Technology, Real Data to Grow Portfolios and Compete for Prizes

Hoboken, N.J. - Bulls and bears, meet the next generation of traders.

On Friday, April 29, students from 20 high schools in New Jersey, New York and beyond will be competing against each other in a contest to see who can grow a virtual $1 million stock portfolio the most.

It is all part of the third annual Trading Day at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. The competition will take place in the Hanlon Financial Systems Labin the Babbio Center, located at River Street and 6th Street, Hoboken.

Trading runs from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

Trading Day is for sophomores and juniors who are interested in studying business when they graduate from high school. Winning team members receive prizes, including scholarships to study business at Stevens during the summer.

The event is being presented by the School of Business at Stevens. TD Ameritrade is offering corporate support.

Marrying Technology with Financial Know-How

For students, Trading Day is more than just an opportunity to test out theories on which stocks will perform best in a short time frame. Student traders will have access to real-time data and Wall Street-standard tools in Stevens' high-tech Hanlon Financial Systems Center, which allows Stevens students and researchers to analyze vast quantities of historical and real-time financial data.

'Our financial lab becomes a bustling trading floor for a day,' said Dr. George Calhoun, director of the quantitative finance program at Stevens. 'While we simulate the frantic energy of a trading floor, we also let students experiment with the tools that have forever changed how trading is done, giving them a head start on understanding the many changes technology has brought to the financial sector.'

'TD Ameritrade is committed to educating and empowering tomorrow's investor,' said Nicole Sherrod, managing director of trading at TD Ameritrade. 'We believe one of the best ways to do this is through real life experiences. This competition exposes the next generation of traders and investors to the many variables involved with trading and helps them understand how integral technology is to investing and the markets. It will be interesting to see how these young traders will act on their own theories and react to breaking market news scenarios.'

Among the resources that students will have at their fingertips during the competition include Bloomberg terminals, CNBC and other news feeds, and live tickers that allow them to shift strategies in direct response to market conditions. Students will be taught to use this advanced technology with the assistance of Stevens faculty and student ambassadors.

Students will also get to meet and network with industry leaders from major New York companies in finance and other industries, including many Stevens business alumni. They will get the chance to ask real-world managers questions about their backgrounds and job duties, and how technology is changing how they do their jobs. They also will be able to get advice on how to prepare to enter college and beyond.
