TM marks its 17th consecutive year of collaboration with PDRM to bring annual safety campaign to Malaysians

As a corporate citizen mindful of its responsibilities to the community at large, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) once again, in collaboration with Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM) today launched the annual safety campaign "Op Selamat 5/2014" in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya celebration.

Held at TM's headquarters, Menara TM, the campaign was launched by Tan Sri Dato' Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, the Inspector General of Police. Also present at the launching ceremony were Tan Sri Dato' Seri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Datuk Che Azemi Haron, Deputy Secretary General, Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, Dato' Mohamed Sharil Mohamed Tarmizi, Chairman of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Dato' Sri Dr. Halim Shafie, Chairman of TM, Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM and other police officers of various ranks.

At the event, Tan Sri Khalid also flagged off the 'Traffic Monitoring Team' and a convoy of motorcyclists and cars to symbolically emphasise the campaign's message.

Op Selamat 5/2014 campaign continues the enhanced safety message from last year's campaign where the focus has encompassed the safety of Malaysian homes while the residents are away for the festive holiday. This 5th edition of the campaign - aptly themed "Rumah Selamat & Selamat Sampai ke Destinasi" will run for two (2) weeks from 21 July until 3 August 2014.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Dato' Sri Dr. Halim said, "TM is happy to extend our collaboration with PDRM for Op Selamat 5/2014 this year. The safety campaign has been further extended from not only to road users to adopt proper and courteous driving etiquette, but also encourages members of the public to take precautions to ensure the homes that they vacate during the holidays are well-protected from any break-in attempts. This year marks 17th consecutive year of our involvement in this campaign, reflecting our unwavering support towards the Government's initiatives to reduce the road mishaps rate and to improve home safety during festive season, in line with one of the National Key Results Area (NKRA) which is, reducing crime."

For the Op Selamat 5/2014 campaign this year, TM is contributing 200 huge umbrellas for the convenience of police officers on-duty along the roads identified as accident-prone areas. In addition, TM has also printed 5,000 Traffic Info Booklets as well as 2,000 car and motorcycle stickers which will be distributed to the public to increase the public awareness on the campaign.

At the event, PDRM also unveiled the Op Selamat toll-free number, 1 800 88 1412, courtesy of TM. Members of the public can call the toll-free number to report traffic congestions, report road accidents, ask for assistance, obtain traffic reports and even report any break-in attempts. Calls made to the number are free of charge and the toll-free number is operational 24 hours throughout the campaign period i.e. from 21 July until 3 August 2014.

"As a responsible corporate citizen, TM has always been supportive of Government's efforts towards the nation's well-being. One of the significant testaments is TM's collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, PDRM and other emergency agencies to establish Malaysia Emergency Response Service 999 or MERS999, the national emergency response service. TM has brought the emergency service to another level when the Company helped in developing SaveME 999, a smart phone application for the benefit of People with Disabilities (PwD), particularly individuals with hearing and speech-impairment, which was launched in September 2013," added Dato' Sri Dr. Halim.

At today's event, another smart phone application for emergency service, developed specifically for situations that would need assistance from PDRM is being previewed. The application, aptly named "SaveME 999 POLIS", is currently in its final testing before its nationwide rollout. Upon downloading the application, users can send their request for emergency assistance by simply pressing the 'Panic Button' or 'Preset Location' on their smart phone.

In conjunction with launch of Op Selamat 5/2014 campaign today, TM and PDRM also opened up booths which enable the audience to obtain more information and tips on safety and precautionary measures during the upcoming festive season.

Throughout Op Selamat 5/2014, traffic on roads are expected to increase by four to five folds as motorists join the balik kampung exodus to get to their destinations from cities and big towns, especially the densely populated Klang Valley. But at the same time, they are reminded to take all the necessary steps to prevent their vacated homes from break-ins. Members of the public who are returning to their home town during the Hari Raya break are advised to inform the police to ensure the safety of their homes. PDRM is also increasing neighborhood patrols in big cities where homes will be vacant during the holiday season.
