Fort St. John, B.C. - As part of a strategic partnership with the Province, TELUS has invested $1.4 million to build two new wireless sites bringing service to about 42 kilometers of Highway 29 between Hudson's Hope and the Highway 97 Junction.

The first site now provides about 18 kilometers of new wireless coverage west of Fort St. John near Bear Flat. The second site provides about 24 kilometers of coverage east and west of Farrell Creek.

"Together, these new wireless sites provide a significant stretch of new coverage along a well-travelled section of Highway 29," said Lance MacDonald, TELUS General Manager for Northern British Columbia. "Along with making travel safer by providing access to 911, these new sites give travellers the ability to make hands-free calls to connect with family and friends, or document a fun road trip in social media."

The project is part of the 10-year Connecting British Columbia Agreement TELUS signed with the Province of B.C. in 2011. Under the terms of the agreement TELUS will invest to connect more than 1,700 kilometres of unconnected highways with wireless service.

"These new sites will help improve the safety for travellers along this part of Highway 29 by improving access to 911 and emergency services," said Pat Pimm, MLA for Peace River North. "Having wireless service along this stretch of highway will also help connect communities, residents and travellers in this region "

TELUS is investing $2.8 billion in new infrastructure and facilities across B.C. through 2016. The company will invest $1.2 billion across the province in 2014, the final year of a three-year plan unveiled in 2012, and has committed to spend another $1.6 billion in 2015 and 2016 to build infrastructure, expand urban and rural Internet connectivity and capacity, and bring the world's fastest wireless technology to more B.C. communities. By the end of 2016, TELUS' investment in operations, infrastructure and technology across B.C. since 2000 will exceed $40 billion.
