Starting from 1 June, Teo is giving up its licence to rebroadcast high-definition (HD) digital terrestrial television (DVB-T) in Kaunas. There will be no changes for Teo Smart TV (IPTV) users and they will continue to see all the HD channels.

Teo started HD rebroadcasts of Eurosport HD, Discovery Showcase HD and National Geographic Channel HD channels for DVB-T users in Vilnius and Kaunas in 2009, after winning the tender announced by the Radio and Television Commission. However, due to significant changes in HD broadcasting transmission service rates, from 1 April 2015 Teo discontinued provision of HD rebroadcasting services in Vilnius, and 1 June 2015 is the day of expiry of its licence for HD rebroadcasting in Kaunas. Teo DVB-T users will continue to see the programmes of these channels in a standard-definition format.

"Rebroadcasting of HD channels over DVB-T in Vilnius has become economically infeasible. In the absence of possibilities for the country-wide development of HD rebroadcasts, we are forced to give up HD rebroadcasts in Kaunas too. However, we continue to expand our fiber-optic access network in order that as many as possible residents of Lithuania have access to the modern technology-based Teo Smart TV", - Nerijus Ivanauskas, Head of B2C at Teo, said.

Last year, the number of customers using Teo fiber-optic Internet access increased by 11 per cent and exceeded 200 thousand. After the company offered a more convenient menu of Teo Smart TV and additional services, last year the number of IPTV customers increased by almost a quarter - up to 130 thousand.

Over the past year, the number of fiber-optic Internet users in Lithuania increased by almost 3 percentage points and reached 34.6 per cent. This is the best result so far among 39 European countries ranked on FTTH Council Europe list.
