The proliferation of new data sources and analytic technologies has rendered existing data integration architectures inadequate to properly manage the balance between data management tasks and analytics workloads. As the complexity increases organizations are struggling to find answers. Teradata can assist organizations with the evaluation of all options, including: deciding whether to modify their extract, transform and load (ETL) code, re-architect ETL processes, or extend the Teradata® Unified Data Architecture® with systems such as Hadoop or a Teradata appliance.

"Successful execution is not only about technology, it's also about people, the right people, with lots of experience and proven methodologies," said Dan Harrington, executive vice president, Global Consulting and Support Services. "Teradata's world class consulting services ensures that customers are constantly able to save a considerable amount of money and maximize resources across the entire analytic ecosystem."

Teradata can assist customers with the evaluation of system performance across the Teradata Unified Data Architecture and offer guidance on the multiple approaches to optimizing their analytic platforms. Some successful engagements are described below.

-- Modify ETL Code A large international telecommunications customer wanted
to extend their Unified Data Architecture with Hadoop to offload ETL
processes from the Teradata Integrated Data Warehouse. However, after
Teradata teams assessed the ETL code and analytic environment, they
found a significant amount of ETL code was inefficient and recommended
the company modify it. This approach freed up capacity for additional
        analytics.

-- Re-Architect Processes Some Teradata customers have built a data lake
repository on Hadoop as part of their Unified Data Architecture. For
example, a major computer manufacturer wanted to identify specific ETL
processes that could be re-architected and run on a Hadoop data lake to
avoid complex, costly data modeling and data integration efforts.
Teradata helped configure the data lake by segmenting a portion for a
data-landing zone, and a portion for ETL processing. This allowed users
to access specific data for discovery, while leveraging the power of
Hadoop to streamline some of the ETL processing. The customer was able
to cost effectively use the data stored in Hadoop to enrich analytic
        insights.

-- Extend UDA with Appliance A U.S. telecommunications company wanted to
optimize data analysis in their ecosystem by assigning workloads to the
most appropriate systems. Teradata consultants recommended extending
their analytical ecosystem by adding a Teradata Appliance for specific
workloads requiring cost-effective system performance and scalability.
The transfer of software was made easy, because Teradata platforms run
the identical Teradata Database. As a result of these efforts, the
company is better able to perform high-value analytics to supply
        business users with insights.

-- Modify Code, Re-Architect Processes, and Extend System A major high-tech
manufacturer had maximized the utilization of its Teradata Integrated
Data? Warehouse and was concerned about possible inefficiencies in the
ETL code and data loading jobs. Initially, Teradata identified data
integration processes to offload to a lower cost Teradata appliance,
allowing for code portability between Teradata systems. Next, Teradata's
focus shifted to high-value ETL jobs and tuned inefficient code and
modified ETL process jobs. Finally, Hadoop was leveraged for specific
ETL jobs. The adoption of all three approaches helped the customer
implement a tiered solution to resolve the issues of inefficiencies in
the ETL code and data loading jobs.

"By leveraging the best systems optimization plan for data integration tasks, organizations can get more value out of their data and analytic ecosystem," said Dan Vesset, program vice president, Business Analytics and Big Data, IDC. "Teradata DIO services can demonstrate how best to improve performance and optimize capacity for business analytics - all while lowering the overall total cost of ownership."
