Electricity consumption in Italy: +1.2% in october

Rome, 22 November 2017 - In October 2017, according to data collected by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy stood at 26.4 billion kWh, a 1.2% increase compared to volumes for the same month last year. The nature of this year's calendar affected demand: this year, in fact, October had one more working day (22 rather than 21) and an average temperature that was essentially in line with October 2016.
Demand in the first ten months of 2017 increased by 1.7% compared to the same period in 2016. Based on the same number of days, the figure is up by +1.9%.
At the regional level, in October 2017 there was an increase in the North (+1.9%) and in Central Italy (+1.2%), while staying quite stable in the South (-0.3%).
The short-term profile for October 2017 showed a seasonally-adjusted increase in electricity demand compared to the previous month (+1.1%). The trend profile is decreasing slightly.
In October 2017, 86.4% of electricity demand was met by national production and the remainder (13.6%) by the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. More specifically, net national production (23 billion kWh) dropped by 4.1% compared to October 2016. Solar power production increased (+36.2%), as did wind production (+0.6%), whereas geothermal (-3.2%), thermoelectric (-5.4%) and hydroelectric power (-18.4%) dropped.
