February 2018

In January 2018, according to data collected by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy stood at 27.5 billion kWh, a 2.8% decrease compared to volumes for the same month the year before. The nature of this year's calendar and temperatures affected demand: this year, in fact, January had one more working day (22 rather than 21) and an average temperature 4°C higher than January 2017.

At the regional level, the January 2018 trend was negative across the country: -0.8% in the North, -4.2% in Central Italy and -6% in the South.

The short-term profile for January 2018 showed a seasonally adjusted decrease in electricity demand compared to the previous month (-2%). This represents a stable trend.

In January 2018, the electricity demand was met 83.4% by national production and the remainder (16.6%) by the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. More specifically, net national production (23.1 billion kWh) decreased by 15.1% compared to January 2017. Wind power production grew (+9.7%), whilst all others declined (geothermal -1.8%, hydroelectric -2%, solar -5.1%, and thermal -19.8%).

The detailed analysis of provisional 2017 and 2018 monthly electricity demand is available in the publication 'Monthly Report on the Electricity System', under the section 'Electric System»Dispatching»Operating Data»Monthly Report' at www.terna.it
