Solar, hydroelectric and wind power production growing

Demand in the first nine months of 2017 has increased by 1.7% compared to the same period of 2016 (+2.2% based on the same number of days)

In September 2017, according to data collected by Terna, the company that manages the Italian national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy stood at 26.1 billion kWh, a 2% decrease compared to volumes for the same month last year. Demand showed a negative reaction to the effect of number of days and temperature: there was one less business day in September compared to September 2016 and a temperature of around 2°C lower compared to the average for that period.

Demand in the first nine months of 2017 increased by 1.7% compared to the same period in 2016. Based on the same number of days, the figure is up by +2.2%.

At the territorial level, the September 2017 trend was negative across the country: -3% in the North, -1% in Central Italy and -0.5% in the South.

The short-term profile for September 2017 showed a seasonally adjusted decrease in electricity demand compared to the previous month (-5.5%). This represents a stable trend.

In September 2017, demand for electricity was met predominately by national production (86.5%), with the remainder (13.5%) from the balance of electricity exchanged with other countries. More specifically, the net national production (22.7 billion kWh) dropped by 5% compared to September 2016. Solar production increased (+9.7%), as did hydroelectric (+10.5%) and wind power (+53.6%), while geothermal (-2.7%) and thermal production (-12.5%) dropped.

Maximum electricity demand in September 2017 was 50,817 MW, which Terna recorded on Friday 1st at 12:00. This was 3.3% higher than the value recorded for September 2016.

The provisional detailed monthly analysis of electricity demand for 2017 and the definitive monthly analysis for 2016 is available in the publication 'Monthly Report on the Electricity System', under the section 'Electric System»Dispatching»Operating Data»Monthly Report' at www.terna.it
