Electricity consumption in Italy: +9.5% in August

In August 2017, according to data collected by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy stood at 26.8 billion kWh, a 9.5% increase compared to volumes for the same month last year. Monthly demand showed a positive reaction to the high average temperature - around 2°C higher compared to the same month of 2016 - which led to a massive increase in the use of electrical appliances for indoor comfort.

Demand in the first eight months of 2017 increased by 2.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2016. Based on the same number of days, the figure is up by +2.6%.
Nationally, the August 2017 trend was positive across the country: +9% in the North, +10.2% in Central Italy and +10% in the South.
The short-term profile for August 2017 showed a seasonally adjusted increase in electricity demand compared to the previous month of 3.4%. This represents an upward trend.
In August 2017, 90.2% of the electricity demand was met with national production and the remaining part (9.8%) was met with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (24.3 billion kWh) increased by 8.1% compared to August 2016. Thermal power production increased (+14.7%), as did solar production (+8.9%); whilst geothermal (-3.4%), hydroelectric (-6.8%) and wind power (-14.4%) dropped.
Maximum electricity demand in August 2017 was 55,002 MW, which Terna recorded on Thursday, 3 July, at 16:00. This was 10.3% higher than the value recorded for August 2016.
